Life Stories was asked to partner with teacher Alison Wakeford and her grade six class at Micklefield Primary School in Cape Town on an extraordinary journey. With no previous experience, and with only broad guidance and support from ourselves, twenty spirited twelve year olds set about researching, filming and editing a life story of their own featuring an older family member. What they achieved is remarkable.

Educationally the project straddled technical learning (filming and editing), journalistic and interviewing skills, appreciation of history and heritage and the world of YouTube uploading and online archiving.

In the end it was not just an exciting school project but the girls were left with a wonderful ancestral interview as well as a priceless reminder of what their interviewee was like when they were twelve. Well done girls, Miss Wakeford and her team. It was a pleasure working with you. If you would like to do a similar project at your school do give us a shout.
