Joe Wolpe with the Life Story of the Cancerians Art Club, July 2012

JOE WOLPE. In June 2012 legendary South African art promoter and gallerist Joe Wolpe sat down with Life Stories founder Lisa Chait and cameraman Ross Campbell to chat about life, art and everything in between.

Known as ‘the man who brought modern art to Cape Town’ Joe has been a much loved and legendary figure on the South African art scene for over 60 years. He was a close friend and promoter of Irma Stern and was with her when she died. He is a passionate supporter of Gassner and Kibel and has himself produced some fine artwork.

Mostly, Joe is a mensch and a lover of life.  He always tells a good joke, was at pains to apologise for the squeaking of his hearing aid during this interview and is one of the kindest men around.  This interview was done to mark Joe’s 90th birthday in July 2012 and the 20th anniversary of ‘The Cancerians’ art and social club. With thanks to Mr B Rabinowitz for making this video possible.
